what's a girl gotta do for some gumboots?

buuuuuut.... really. we've been having freakishly flood-like weather here for at least the past week and a half. on Saturday, i decided it was time to bite the bullet and finally buy me a pair of gumboots. actually, i decided this on Thursday; but my life was so crazy on Thursday and Friday that i postponed the occasion to Saturday.

apparently, this postponement was a bad idea, because there are now no gumboots to be found in Grahamstown. for realsies. and since the road from Grahamstown to Port Elizabeth looks something like this...

...i somehow highly doubt any transporters will be making their way to Lil' Varsity Hometown with a fresh new crop of wellies just for me. (more photos HERE, if you're interested.) and honestly, we're lucky here in Grahamstown - our town looks NOTHING like Port Alfred, which is just up the road. take a look:

so, what does this mean for gumbootless Hannahkin? well, basically:

ha! in all honesty though, all three pairs of my sneakers have suffered tremendously due to this weather. my beloved pink chucks (after which this entire blog is named) even started moulding at one point! it's awful.

in lieu of having any gumboots to call my own, i went online-shopping and found heaps of the things which i'd just love to welcome into my life. take a look and tell me you wouldn't, too!

these ones just make me laugh and laugh and laugh... at their terrible use of grammar ;)

aaaaah, gumboots! when will you be mine?

happy belated caturday: the sister edition

first off, forgive the tardiness of this blog post. "why," you ask, "are you posting a Caturday post on a Sunday? that makes no sense!" then you shake your head at me in half-amusement, half-confusion. well, hear me out. i meant to post it yesterday; i really had every good intention to do so. but i was a little preoccupied because i went to see Sindi in the morning, and then spent a good portion of the afternoon making a salad, and then took that salad and my merry little self and Chris to a party in my sister's honour. and why, you ask?

because IT WAS SINDI'S BIRTHDAY YESTERDAY!

yeeeeeah!

the cats wish you a happy birthday. they insist that you accept their good wishes. that is all.

it's safe to say that Sindi is the coolest cat. as in, ever. she is majorly awesome and caring; she listens; she loves. she bakes a meeeeeean chocolate cake and is also a chocolate-chip cookie queen... this cat doesn't even rival her in awesomeness points, and that's really saying something.

i mean... REALLY.

Sindi is funny and kind and original and beautiful, and i cannot imagine life without her.

Sindi's and my dream book cafe by the beach. note the cat.

i just love her a lot a lot, and reckon she's the best sister - and friend - anyone could ever have.

beautiful things

before i get into the heart of this post, i need everyone to know that we are living through a flood, here in Grahamstown. this was one of the streets i usually cross on my way down to campus this morning, after a whole night of torrential rain (that has calmed down to a schizophrenic mix of sun and rain today).

i couldn't cross the street, guys.
it is CRAZINESS.
and my shoes are all getting ruined.
and i hate having wet socks all day.
#endofmoan!

and now onto the good stuff! there are so many beautiful things across which i've stumbled in the past few weeks that i want to share with you. ready?

this video:
(A video by film-maker, Andrea Dorfman, and poet/singer/songwriter, Tanya Davis. Davis wrote the beautiful poem and performed in the video which Dorfman directed, shot, animated by hand and edited.)

then, this photo:

(yes, that is me on the left. and my friend Kerin. we were AMAZING little 4 year olds.)
