My Life Of Late

guess what? for much of yesterday, my room had a massive gaping hole in the side of it. and it was totally intentional. here's the story: we decided sometime last year that the room was stinky-dark. the lack of light combined with the rotting of our beds (yes, there were wood borers in our lovely beds. hah.) was making the room into a mould nest. it didn't smell nice and it was very stuffy. so we decided to be rid of the beds, and put a ha-yoooge window in the side of the room. WOOT! it has finally happened, friends. there is a lovely window now in the wall.. i will even give you evidence that i am not lying.

what it looked like before...
...what it looks like now, on the inside...
...and what it looks like now on the outside!
in other news, last week was basically the best of my entire life... or this year, at least. it was the last week of term, which is always awesome, but even awesomer was the fact that i, along with 8 of my friends from school, got to go to the most incredible performance art festival in the history of the world (that i have been to). it was run by the Grahamstown Foundation - Grahamstown is where Sindi goes to school now, by the way, and it is pretty much the performing arts capital of South Africa, if not Africa. the KZN Schools Festival was part of a series of festivals for Grade 11 students all over the country; it was held at Hilton College, a beautiful school about 3 hours away from our abode... and it was, quite frankly, life-changing. we not only got to witness some of SA's most under-appreciated and enormously talented performers take to the stage, but we actually got to work alongside them in workshops that challenged, inspired and humiliated *ahem* grew us, both as artists and as people. if i'm sounding a little repetitive and boring at the moment, i'm sorry - but all that i've said is true. and then there was this man named Liam Magner... yah. i am basically in love with him. you would be, too, if you witnessed what i did... but we'll leave it there.

this is the main hall at Hilton, which housed the theatre. it was tea time... hence all the students on the lawns :)
this is the Eshowe gang! except for that random girl 3rd from the left in the back... i don't even know where she's from. *shrugs* no matter.
another lovely thing about the festival is i got to hang out with my cupcake, Tayla! she was my class companion, but she moved away earlier this year... i miss her :(
by far the best workshop... my one with Liam Magner, in which i was an addict, a RoboChair, a dog, an escapee, a drunk and a Zulu warrior, among other things.
Mr Magner (pictured below) is part of a comedic duo named The Neon Anthems. they performed last at the Festival, doing a stellar job in a hilarious show they wrote called "TOKOLOSHE COME AND GO". at this particular part of the stage, Liam stood right in front of me. i thought to myself, "Hanny, you must capture this man's amazingness on film, no matter how blurry the photo may turn out!" so out came my camera, and just as i was about to take the photo, Liam looked right at me and said, "Oh! You're taking a photo! Please Facebook that." pssshhh... i have never been more proud of being spoken to in my life. this was the photo that ensued, and i have not only faithfully uploaded it to Facebook... now it's on Blogger, too!
uhmmm. this is Liam playing dead while performing in "TOKOLOSHE COME AND GO". i hope you are starting to understand why i love him.
i got home from the Festival of Coolness on Thursday night, at around 9 PM. on Friday, an hour after school, i was on my way to Durban, to hang out with my bff Cathryn and her family for the weekend. it was uh-MAY-zin', let me tell you! on Friday, i went with Cathy and her sister Roanne to their youth, where we did ridiculous renditions of David and Goliath and the feeding of the 5000. after that we hung out at their house and listened to Jimmy Needham *who rocks my socks* and Relient K... yes, only the coolest band in the world. see, it was already fabulous. Saturday was Roanne's birthday, so we got to do all SORTS of cool stuff! we went to the I ♥ Market, which is a genius little market that is run the first Saturday of each month. it is beautiful... i ♥ the I ♥ Market.
we got to eat these amazing designer cupcakes, and mine had a raspberry on it (have i mentioned that i am a fan of raspberries? oh, yes. raspberries FTW. just sayin'...)
plus, Cathy and i purchased a 100-year-old dictionary of total superduperness. it has some of the funniest words and definitions EVAH.
we also went to the NSA and Bean Bag Bohemia and looked at incredible artworkses!
this was at Bean Bag Bohemia... i loved it there.
we watched Enchanted back at their house and then had a mini-party for Rosie, complete with relatives, cake, ice cream, singing, tasty food and general loveliness. YAY for parties! when everyone had departed, we watched Hairspray... and then slept. i got to go to church TWICE on Sunday - i love church! - and in between, we ate amazing food and watched Just Like Heaven. (we were going to make pancakes but there were no eggs! *sob*) my parents came to the evening service and we hung out - Cathy and her family go to this amazing church called Victory Faith that serves FOOD after evening service, can you believe?! they also have this phenomenal hot chocolate... i am seriously thinking of doing YOYL just to hang out there and drink hot chocolate all day. and to grow as a child of God... yah, that too.

Cathy, Rosie and me... i love these girls SO SO much!

later on that evening, my sister came back from university! she's hanging out with us for this and next week... siiiick.

now i am on vacation till next week Wednesday, and i've been watching movies. Lord Of The Rings movies, to be precise. when they came out, my godmother sent us all the movies - and not just the ordinary movies, but the Special Extended Editions. we watched them all yesterday and today. they are still the coolest. by the way, i am Éowyn.. which makes this hunk my husband.

yesssss... i know. i scored beeg time.
look, we are so happy! aaah... warm fuzziness descends.
i found this online today, and it made me smile. (all credit to Anke Eissmann)
"He [Faramir] looked at her [Éowyn], and being a man whom pity deeply stirred, it seemed to him that her loveliness amid her grief would pierce his heart. And she looked at him and saw the grave tenderness in his eyes, and yet knew, for she was bred among men of war, that here was on whom no Rider of the Mark would outmatch in battle."

"And so they stood on the walls of the City of Gondor, and a great wind rose and blew, and their hair, raven and golden, streamed out mingling in the air. And the Shadow departed, and the Sun was unveiled, and light leaped forth; and the waters of Anduin shone like silver, and in all the houses of the City men sang for the joy that welled up in their hearts from what source they could not tell."

(go here for the rest of the images)

yes, i adore the love story of these two. it makes me want to cry... thanks for that, Mr Tolkien.

and that is what i have been doing lately! now? i shall go sleep :)

The Catch-Up

hi!
*cue Slim Shady music*
guess who's back? back again? Hanny's back.. tell her friends!
sheesh, i am so ghetto. srsly, though... it's good to be blogging again :) after promising to blog more (do you remember that?) i feel sheepish for abandoning you all for a little less than a month. *sigh* have i mentioned that school is evil? anyway, i have other purposes for this blog post besides grumbling about the awfulness of homework and suchlike, so let's get down to business ;)

firstly, did anyone notice that i left out an incredibly important component of my life a couple of blog posts ago, when i mentioned all the things i was grateful for? *shakes head in disgust* yes, friends, 'tis true... i COMPLETELY skipped out BOOKS! books are basically the love of my life. so i decided that to make up for my horribleness, i will give you all a list of my favourite books of 2008 and the start of 2009 :) ready? go!
#1 : BLUE LIKE JAZZ
by Don Miller

okay, so i don't even know what to tell you. just get the book and read it. and laugh, and cry, and agree and disagree. and laugh and cry some more, and repent a bit, and shake your head in amazement at the sheer coolness of this book. Don Miller is a freakin' genius. all i'm gonna say. (in case any of you were interested, he prayed at the Democratic Convention last year. good prayer, too... read it.)
joint #2 : THE HOST
by Stephenie Meyer
so. i was concerned when i first heard about The Host. with Stephenie investing so much in her Twilight characters, could she possibly come up with a completely different story and still make it brilliant? i decided to bite the bullet while in the US of A and got it. i have NO idea why i was so wary. Stephenie can do anything, as far as i'm concerned. (except fly... i'm not gonna recommend that. unless she has a Nimbus 2000 - then she can go for it.) The Host was absolutely one of the best reads i've had in a long, LONG time. i think the thing i love the most about Stephenie is that she is so amazingly talented at weaving relationships and emotion through her writing. it's compelling and beautiful, and i know that from now on, whether she writes about caterpillars crawling on daffodils or a guy delivering pizza, i'll enjoy it. so there, Mr Stephen King. bah to you.(plus, she used the word "squish" again. just sayin'. "SQUISH!" *squeals* i love that word.)

joint #2 : THE BOOK THIEF
by Marcus Zusak
this book broke my heart. the imagery, the history, the story line, the characters... everything about it took me in and changed the way i see literature, and the world in general, today. it was real and personal and affecting. plus, i fell in love with Rudy Steiner. i'm gonna stop there.
#3 (collectively) : THE GOOSE GIRL, ENNA BURNING and RIVER SECRETS
by Shannon Hale

Shannon Hale is a wonder woman. this series is the Bomb. as in, you have NO IDEA how fabulous they are, dahlings. her characters are really vivid and relatable. plus, it's fantasy... Hanny loves!

#4 : BREAKING DAWN
by Stephenie Meyer
aaah-HAH! i bet you thought that because i'd already put The Host on my favourites list, i was going to forget about Breaking Dawn! not gonna happen, friends. this book, although slightly different from my expectations, was the perfect way to end off the series! i'm not going to talk about too much of it's awesomeness since Chell hasn't read the series (love!) and all of you other awesome peeps probably have. so just go through all the awesomeness in your head, and know that's what i'm thinking, aight?

#5 : THE TWO PRINCESSES OF BAMARRE
by Gail Carson Levine

okay. admittedly, last year was not the first time i'd read this book. it was something like the zillionth. but since i hadn't read it for a year, or at least a couple months, i decided to read it again... and fell in love with it all over again. have i mentioned that Gail Carson Levine is super? if you're unfamiliar with her, i demand that you remove yourself from this blog at once!! no, wait... don't go just yet. i will allow you to continue reading if you do so solemnly swear to read: a) Ella Enchanted and b) The Two Princesses of Bamarre. of course, she's written other books of almost-equal coolness, but those are now law. so go read them, already!

#6 (collectively) : THE HERO AND THE CROWN/SPINDLE'S END
by Robin McKinley

*sigh* have i mentioned how much of a Fantasy Freak i am? this list is testament to my addiction to most things fantasy. (and when i say fantasy, i mean smart, sassy fantasy. but you knew that already, right?) well, Robin McKinley is something like the Queen of Fantasy. that's why i couldn't decide between two of her books... they are both so awesome. TH&TC is fabulous because the main character is an amazing, sword-wielding, dragon-slaying heroine with the most beautiful name in history (Aerin. *Hanny dies at its beauty!*) whom i relate to on the highest level in terms of many things, including co-ordination. and Spindle's End is fabulous because it is a COOLER (can you believe?) retelling of Sleeping Beauty. that is all.

before i end my Books section, can someone pur-lease tell Jamie T to write his book already? then i promise i will stop blathering on about him. for reals.

now that BOOKS are out of the way, i want to wish my lovely BFF Lauren an AMAZING 21st birthday! i feel like a jerk because her birthday was over a week ago and i didn't do ANYTHING except write her a little note online :P i AM going to send you a card, dearest, i PROMISE! in the meantime, i hope this is okay :)

this is the photo of Lauren and her Ted that i have up in my room. isn't she beautiful?

i also want to thank my wonderful friend Ana Cristina for the lovely bloggy award she gave me... squee! ...and i want to thank the most awesomest Nancy Face, who sent me a fabulous Valentines Day card in the post! thanks a bunch, Nancy! :)

speaking of Valentines Day.... Valentines Day is a big day at my school. on Valentines Day, everyone wears normal clothes (we usually have to wear a uniform - bleugh!) and gives eachother chocolates and teddy bears and mugs. i don't really like Valentines Day; i am the unofficial Scrooge of Valentines Day. i've never liked it because i've never had cause to like it. this year, though, since Valentines Day fell on a Saturday, we celebrated at school.. on Friday the 13th! tee hee. on the actual day, i had a hard time. my parents and i went to a funeral of a family friend and colleague of my dad's who died unexpectedly... i am not a fan of funerals. later on, the day got better, when i got to watch my favourite rugby team (the Sharks, baby!) play the Stormers - a rugby team from Cape Town - and WIN in one of the first games of the season! today, some friends of mine who are out of school had a crumpet party (where i got to hang out with my main man, Scott!) and Valentines Day came up. "we had a very rotic day yesterday," they said. "...by which you mean?" i asked, befuddled. "it was romantic without a man!" they replied. hee hee... i guess that'll be me next year, too, then :)
i am missing Sindi - we dropped her off at university (all of 13 hours away) last weekend. she is far far away... and i miss her.
lastly but not leastly, can you all do me a favour and click on the link below? even if you don't join SocialVibe, i will earn points from a click... and i am a points fanatic :) thank you!

that's all from me... i am outta here!

anniversary

written on the 22nd of January in the journal of Hannah.

a year ago from yesterday, a little girl named Matilda Rose had a living, breathing daddy.

a day later, he was gone.

today was the first anniversary of Heath Ledger's death. today the nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards were announced, with Heath a shoo-in in the Best Supporting Actor category for his amazing role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. today, Sindi and i went over to bff Eleni's house, where we watched Ten Things I Hate About You, ate marshmallows and jelly tots and lit approximately 6 candles in Heath's memory. on our way home, i held the last candle to remain alight - a beautiful rainbow spiralling birthday candle in a candle holder - in my hands and felt the heat that came off of it. on the car radio, Never Gonna Be Alone by Nickelback was playing, and the lines, "you've gotta live every single day like it's the only one/what if tomorrow never comes?" struck me like a slap on the cheek. the candle burnt out right at the end of the song, and i thought it ironic that i'd only ever watched 3 of Heath's movies, and yet there i was, hurting for someone i'd never met.

i blame it partially on Jamie.

at the beginning of this month, i discovered a blog that Jamie the Hero wrote a short while after Heath's death. it is one of the best pieces he's ever written, i think, along with note to self and the TWLOHA story.

when i get to the 7th paragraph, i'm struggling to hold myself together.

i'm always in tears by the time i reach the end of the 8th.
Jamie's pretty good at making me cry.

i cannot begin to imagine the type of pain Heath's family and friends have gone through and are still going through. Jamie's right - the main loss wasn't to the acting industry. the main loss was to a family that must have been tearing apart at the seams from the appalling hurt of it all. your children should not die before you. the main loss was to a little girl, confused, lost and hurt, who won't see her daddy again for the rest of her life. you should not lose someone so dear when you are only 2 years old.

i have been crying since the 8th paragraph, and i am still crying inside.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MEEEEEE.....

for reals! it's my birthday today... *eep!*

the weather is glum, which is a shame. Eshowe has been Rain City for the past few days. in fact, it's rather Forks-esque in all it's grey sky glory. now let me tell ya... i am not a rain fan. in fact, i cringe when i am in rain... i tend to dash through it screaming, "i'm melting! melting!!" in Wicked Witch of the West fashion. but since summer is my favourite season, and summer is also the rainy season, i guess that i will have to deal. still, i was unimpressed that it had to be gloomy on this day of awesomeness... oh well :)

i am excited for 2009, folks. firstly, i am excited that i am now officially a junior... although over here in the Land of South Africa, we just say that we are in Grade 11. no awesome titles until you're in Grade 12.... meh. still though, i'm amped that i'm considered an old kid at my school (FINALLY!) - you'd think that hanging around for the past 3 years entitles me to some cool status.

i am also excited that i am FINALLY 16! woot woot! there's nothing like feeling way older than you really are :) the Curse of the Younger Sibling states that you will either be WAAAAY more immature than everyone else your age, or you will be WAAAAY more mature than everyone else your age. i am testimony to this dumb curse. *heavy sigh* but no more of that! my birthday has arrived! nevermind that it happened to fall on the first day of school... :) i mentioned to Lauren the other day that it would be the best to celebrate your whole birthday MONTH... and that's what i've been doing! it all started with the amazing New Years party my cousins and i had at my aunt Kymmie's house - there, i got my hair partially dyed blue and tattooed my arm with henna - fun stuff! then, a few days later on the 3rd of January, my sister, cousins and a few of my friends threw me a SURPRISE birthday party which was cleverly disguised as a party in honour of The Office. we basically watched mountainous episodes of this legendary show, and during one of the breaks we took between episodes, a magnificent cookies and cream cake appeared and i was crowned the Birthday Queen! aaaaww - thanks, you guys! then, this past weekend, my friend Cathy came spent the weekend with me at my house! we had the best time ever, making red velvet cupcakes that had some pretty hilarious endings, visiting the forest and the beach (even though the weather was horrible), playing Scrabble and eating pizza at The Clay Oven, having soda pops in Ballito for the first time ever and watching movies and hilarious video clips (Rhett&Link and Flight of the Conchords, anyone?). what an amazing birthday present! on Monday, my fabulous friends Eleni and Monique came over and gave me a bag FULL of wonderful presenty goodness.. and today i got showered with love and gifts from my family, friends and random strangers on the corridor at school who seemed to be inspecting my chocolate brownies closely... hmm, i wonder how they vanished so quickly? today has been the best.. plus, for dinner, my mom and sister have made yummy chicken and mashed potatoes, and then i'm off to cell group where we'll chow MORE brownies! YAY, i love birthdays!

another thing that makes me excited is that i am starting ballroom dancing classes with one of my best friends! yes, i saw you raise your eyebrows at me. and if you know me well, i bet you are shaking your head in horror at the thought of me taking dancing lessons. but i shall view this as an adventure, friends! i will not pay attention to the fact that i'm going to suck! i will not remind myself that i can hardly walk over flat surfaces without tripping, let alone glide along them smoothly! *cringes inwardly* and no, i wasn't being sarcastic when i mentioned this among things i am excited about. i truly am excited about it... which is even more crazy :) don't worry, Shaw... i promise i won't embarrass you. or i won't intentionally, anyway.

i have also decided that i need to write more. and when i say "write more", i mean, "blog more"! isn't that exciting? i can just see you all jumping up and down with pure joy and happiness... or not. *sigh* but srsly... this blog needs to get its GROOVE on! also, i will be getting a laptop soon... meaning i will be free to blog whenever i choose, and not just when the family computer is vacant! i like the sound of that, don't you?

i am off to eat dinner :)
